Oh…so what do you actually DO?

Them: “Hey, I heard you got a new job! That’s cool! What do you do?”

Me: “I’m an instructional coach.”

Them: (insert puzzled face and awkward silence) “So, what do you actually do?

For the first few weeks of this past summer, this was a weekly occurrence.  And honestly, I didn’t really know how to answer.

But we’re through the first quarter, and I’m eager to answer that question! “I’m an instructional coach, and I help teachers set their own goals for growth, and help them meet those goals.”

The Coaching Cycle

What is it?

The coaching cycle has been popping up in the world of education recently, though it definitely isn’t a new concept. While researchers have studied instructional coaching, and its various forms, it is still widely unfamiliar to many teachers. The coaching cycle is a structured procedure in which a teacher works with a coach to set a goal they have for their classroom.  What kind of goals or interests might a teacher have?

  • How many students are ACTIVELY engaged in my lesson?
  • Am I asking thought provoking questions, or am I just trying to get them to guess what answer I’m looking for?
  • Who is doing more talking, me or the students?
  • My class gets super chatty, but only during certain times…what is setting them off?
  • They do all their classwork and homework, but completely fail the tests…what gives?
  • I’m not quite sure what I want to work on, but I just want to grow as a teacher

So then what?

Reach out to your instructional coach! The coach meets with the teacher to talk about the goals they want to accomplish through the coaching cycle.  The coach will often observe the class, and the coach and teacher will discuss different strategies that could help the teacher meet their goal.  The observation isn’t for the coach to pick apart everything the teacher is doing. The coach makes NO judgments! This isn’t about “right” or “wrong” practices! This is about giving the teacher the tools they need to improve in the areas they want to work on.

So this is only for teachers who are struggling?

No way!!! EVERY single teacher, even the absolute best, can benefit from coaching! Do pro athletes still go to practice? Yup. And who do they see when they get there? Coaches.

By Not Moving Forward, You’re Deciding to Move Backwards

I need to share a story. At the very beginning of my career, I sat in the August “Welcome Back” meeting for teachers, wide-eyed and naive to this journey I had just embarked on.  I’m taking copies, eagerly soaking in all of the information shared, feeling like I’m about to change the world. (Yup – your typical first year teacher) I watch a colleague take out their lesson plan book from the previous year, and start copying word-for-word into their new lesson plan book. I sat there, watching, puzzled. I couldn’t understand. I knew this was a veteran teacher, but there wasn’t one thing they wanted to change? Nothing that could have been updated? Didn’t this teacher ever get bored?  I wanted to believe that this was just the way this teacher planned for the first few days, but unfortunately I watched this same process happen throughout the year.

An amazing administrator shared a quote with me last week, and I can’t get it out of my head.

 

This quote has stuck with me.  This is my tenth year in education.  In my nine years in the classroom, I never felt like I was “done” searching for new teaching strategies, trying different communication tools for parents, testing new technology tools, finding other educators to collaborate with, or learning about new trends in education.  I feed off of it. I crave it.  It energizes me and makes me feel like each new school year is a new world of possibilities.

This quest to improve isn’t because I thought I was terrible, though as a teacher (and a mom for that matter) self-doubt always creeps in, but it was because I wanted to do better. I wanted my students to do better. Just because I had always taught plot and main idea a certain way, didn’t mean it was the best way. Or, it might have been the best way a few years ago, but some new strategies could be more effective.

There are several issues in failing to grow and move forward. First of all, our students are missing out. They’re missing out on innovative opportunities.  The world our students in growing up in is so different from the world, even five years ago. Teaching for ten years? Things are drastically different!

Asking other teachers if they have new ideas isn’t a sign of weakness.  Joining PD online doesn’t mean you aren’t good at your job and you need to be “fixed.”  Attending conferences, going to EdCamps, hopping on a Twitter chat, networking with teachers outside your building or division. These are the marks of life-longer learners. We (teachers) talk about wanting students to be life-long learners, and we have to be willing to do the same!  We have to show our students our willingness to grow.

How do you grow?

Make connections with other educators through Twitter. Join a Twitter chat on innovation, educational technology, your content or curriculum, or an topic you are interested.

Go observe a colleague! There is so much you can learn from watching another teacher! You may not see something that you would use with your students exactly, but could give you ideas on other methods to use in your classroom.  You aren’t “spying” on your colleagues. You aren’t evaluating. You are learning. You are growing.

Ask a colleague to observe you! Let them know what you’re focusing on and working on professionally, and ask them to give you some feedback. Are you trying some new engagement strategies? Are you trying some different question stems to evoke deeper thinking? Have your colleague watch that specifically. Still not an evaluation, but it gives you some formative assessment to keep growing!

Professional athletes are the best at what they do, but they still put in intense hours to improve.  They never settle. We shouldn’t either. Our students deserve teachers who push harder because they can do better. We can do better, not because we aren’t doing a good job,  but because we can always do better.

True Confessions of a PLC

Confession: teachers can be hypocritical.

We penalize students for late homework, but how many teachers have responded to parent emails past the 24-hour benchmark? Or submitted their SMART goal past the deadline? We fuss at students for being tardy to class, but who hasn’t walked into a meeting a few minutes late because they needed a bathroom break, fresh cup of coffee, or got caught up chatting with a colleague in the hallway?  And faculty meetings…? We groan that students aren’t paying attention in class, having side conversations, or on their phones. Faculty meetings look very similar!

Fear not! I am NOT suggesting that we shouldn’t hold students accountable! Those that know me well, know that is the last thing I would suggest, but what I am suggesting is that the same best practices with students are also best practices with adult learners. Our students disengage from the work that they don’t feel has any meaning or value. They rush through essays or worksheets, “fake” their reading logs, and fudge their way through group discussions, clearly not prepared for the topic. As teachers, we get frustrated! Why don’t they see the importance of what we do?! Why don’t they see the potential for growth and learning if they put real effort into the task?!?!

Teachers do the same thing with PLCs. Yup. I said it.

Teachers halfheartedly go through the motions, answering the questions with as many buzzwords as possible, all the while joking that no one probably reads them. (*note – not ALL teachers or PLC meetings end up like this, but many do)

But it isn’t completely their fault. PLCs (in our division) have not been given their proper due. PLC meetings, when done right, have a HUGE impact on student learning. When teachers commit to really answering the four focus questions, there is power in the collaboration that follows.

What do we want students to learn?

Listing the standards isn’t the goal. Anyone can look up the standards from the state website and match them to the topic of the unit. The purpose is deeper than that here. What do you want students to know? What do you want students to be able to do with their knowledge? What do you want them to transfer into their daily lives? Really think about what you want your students to walk away from this unit knowing…because success in our world is so much bigger than SOL7.3a.

How do we want them to learn it?

Plan the learning targets THEN plan the activities. Activities are meant to be chosen carefully to provide the learning opportunity needed to achieve the learning targets. Really evaluate your lessons. Are they really supporting the learning targets, or are they just the same lessons you’ve always used. Use a critical lens in this discussion.

What will we do if they don’t learn it?

There are some students who just don’t “get it” the first time you teach it. They need to see it again. And again. And again…. If you’re always “reteaching” the material in the SAME way you delivered it the first time, you’re not RETEACHING, you’re REPEATING. This discussion calls for creativity. What have you tried that has failed? Let’s not use it again. What else could you try? Have you done stations? Small group instruction? Have you tried “flipping” your classroom, so they’re doing the instructional part at home via video, so you can provide targeted remediation during the block? Can you and your co-teacher team up and divide students into homogeneous ability groups? There isn’t one strategy that will work. And the same strategies you used last year, may not work for this year’s crew. You have to dig deep. But, aren’t our students worth it?

What will we do if they already know it?

MOST. UNADDRESSED. QUESTION.
Some kids walked into your classroom on Day 1, and could pass your SOL. That doesn’t make your job easier. In fact, it makes it harder. If that student could meet that benchmark before the end of first quarter, but didn’t “pass-advanced” on the end of the year benchmark – you failed them. I know that’s harsh, but it’s true. The educational system has become so fixated on meeting that passing level of performance, but that just means that the majority of our students knew about HALF of the content. HALF! We’re aiming for mediocrity! How are you going to push those higher level thinkers? Don’t punish them with more work, but give them a task that challenges them. Give them a project that will require them to extend themselves. Put them in charge of creating a remediation presentation, game, video, or handout. Let them use their knowledge to create something useful for someone else. These students are wasting away while we pat ourselves on the back for our “passing” scores.

 

Planning time is more valuable than gold. I get that. I know that teachers have duty, parent phone calls, papers to grade, IEP and 504 meetings, and so many other obligations. PLCs get added to the list of “let’s check the box and move along.” And you know what, someone may not come behind you and read the PLC notes you posted. But just like our students, we need to see the value in the task we’re being asked to do. Make your PLC meaningful. Watch student growth sky-rocket.

Welcome!

While I’ve never been known to be short on words, the idea of starting a blog was never something I thought much about. What could I possibly have to say that people would want to hear? What could I offer that people would value? While I still very much have those questions, (and still no answers), what I do have is passion.

Education has been the only career I considered for my entire life. I knew from a young age that I was meant to teach. I never started to question my decision until I reached the classroom. Nothing can prepare you for the reality of teaching. It is hard. Very hard. And the only people who can TRULY understand are other educators.  “But you get three months off in the summer” (every teacher just shuddered reading those words).  First of all, we get about six weeks. And most teachers I know are working all summer, either at summer school, part-time jobs, or getting ready for the next school year.  Secondly, we work WAY beyond 40 hours a week during the year, and we don’t get overtime. So I like to think of it as “comp time.” The days are long, the money is a joke, and the profession isn’t really respected in our society, yet I have the extreme pleasure of working with some of the most dedicated educators in our country.  Why do these rock-star teachers show up with 110%, day after day, year after year? Passion.

Passion is what separates a great teacher from a good teacher.  Passion doesn’t mean that you do everything right in your classroom, but it does mean that you are ceaseless in searching for best practices.  Passion is what has teachers up at 1 am, thinking about a lesson they need to teach, a student they’re worried about, or a connection they think they missed. Passion is what has teachers spending their evenings, and weekends, and summers searching for new ideas, new strategies, attending professional development, and growing a Professional Learning Network.  Passion is what pushes us to tears, overcome with frustration, feelings of being inadequate, and not enough for our students. We want the best for our students. We want to prepare them for life, not for “the test.”

I once attended a professional development conference in which the speaker said “If you’ve got the passion, I can teach you anything else you need to know. The only thing I can’t teach you is passion.”

So I encourage you to follow along with my blogging journey. I’ll share many strategies, teaching tools, and best practices. If you bring the passion, I can teach you anything else.
